Capítulo do livro: "Jurisdição e Hermenêutica Constitucional"

Convergent validity of pain measuring tools among Nigerian children2009 •
This prospective study was carried out at the Children Outpatient Clinic of the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, Nigeria. The study aims to determine the convergent validity of the Oucher, Observer Pain Scale, Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) among Nigerian children. Children aged between 6 months and 12 years who required venepuncture or phlebotomy for various investigative procedures were recruited. Demographic data and pain assessment scores were documented on a data collection form. Pain was assessed by a trained research assistant at baseline, during the procedure and immediately after the procedure using the 4 pain scales. The mean age (+/- SD) of the children was 5.5 +/- 4.3 years, boys accounted for 93 (52%) and girls 86 (48%). Pain score ranged from 0 (no pain) to 10 (worst pain) during the procedure; 72% (125) of the children had a pain score of at least 4. The median pain score during the procedure were 4 (Observer Pain Scale), 5 (O...

Objective: To ascertain the level of knowledge, attitudes and practices of medical and dental students regardingvaccination against Hepatitis B virus.Material and Methods: This descriptive research work was conducted among medical and dental students fromKhyber Medical College and Khyber College of Dentistry Peshawar, Pakistan respectively from January 2017 to May,2017. Male and female students from all academic years were recruited in the study. After informed consent, studentswere requested to fill in a pre-formed questionnaire. Data was collected in Microsoft excel and then tabulated usingMicrosoft excel. Results were tabulated in the form of percentages. Results: One hundred thirty-one (50.4%) male and 129 (49.6%) female medical (51.2%) and dental (48.8%) studentsparticipated in the study. Their ages ranged from 19 to 24 years. Of these students, 112 (43.1%) had initiated vaccinationagainst Hepatitis B virus whereas 148 (56.9%) had not started vaccination. Of these, only 86 (33.1...

Event Distortion-Based Clustering Algorithm for Energy Harvesting Wireless Sensor Networks2021 •
Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) consist of compact deployed sensor nodes which collectively report their sensed readings about an event to the Base Station (BS). In WSNs, due to the dense deployment, sensor readings can be spatially correlated and it is nonessential to transmit all their readings to the BS. Therefore, for more energy efficient, it is vital to choose which sensor node should report their sensed readings to the BS. In this paper, the event distortion-based clustering (EDC) algorithm is proposed for the spatially correlated sensor nodes. Here, the sensor nodes are assumed to harvest energy from ambient electromagnetic radiation source. The EDC algorithm allows the energy-harvesting sensor nodes to select and eliminate nonessential nodes while maintain an acceptable level of distortion at the BS. To measure the reliability, a theoretical framework of the distortion function is first derived for both single-hop and two-hop communication scenarios. Then, based on the deri...

Quantum MechanicalMolecular Mechanical Studies on Spectral Tuning Mechanisms of Visual Pigments and Other Photoactive Proteins2008 •
The protein environments surrounding the retinal tune electronic absorption maximum from 350 to 630 nm. Hybrid quantum mechanical/molecular mechanical (QM/MM) methods can be used in calculating excitation energies of retinal in its native protein environments and in studying the molecular basis of spectral tuning. We hereby review recent QM/MM results on the phototransduction of bovine rhodopsin, bacteriorhodopsin, sensory rhodopsin II, nonretinal photoactive yellow protein and their mutants.

TCTP Silencing in Ovarian Cancer Cells Results in Actin Cytoskeleton Remodeling and Motility Increase2015 •
Translationally Controlled Tumor-associated Protein (TCTP) plays a role in a plethora of normal and cancer cell functions including cell cycle progression, cell growth and metastasis. Our previous studies showed that TCTP interacts with cellular cytoskeleton and is localized, in cell-type specific manner, on actin filaments in various types of ovarian cancer cells. Here we used small interfering RNA (siRNA) for silencing TCTP expression in human ovarian surface epithelial noncancerous cell line HIO180, ovarian carcinoma cell lines SKOV3 and OVCAR3 and analyzed effect of TCTP silencing on actin cytoskeleton and cell motility. We show that a down regulation of TCTP caused dramatic restructuring and redistribution of actin filaments in HIO180, SKOV3 and OVCAR3 cells and resulted in cell motility increase. This previously unidentified dependence of actin cytoskeleton remodeling and cell motility on TCTP level might be responsible for high metastatic potential and aggressiveness of ovar...
