Katy Perry sparks debate after saying she and her dog are going vegan

Katy Perry has sparked online criticism after announcing a huge change to her diet.

On Saturday, the 'Smile' hitmaker announced that she is ready to go vegan and her dog, Nugget, will be joining her.

"I'm about 95% ready to be 100% VEGAN..." she tweeted. "My dog Nugget has been joining me on this journey for the past 4 monthz. Pray for us ok."

But not everyone supported the singer's decision, with many followers saying it's animal cruelty to put a dog on a vegan diet.

"I hope nugget has only been joining you for emotional support!" one user wrote. "Dogs shouldn't be vegan, so please continue providing their necessary requirements! Also I mean being imperfectly vegan is fine like just do your best out there and don't beat yourself up for any mistakes."

"Stop pushing your human morals on an animals evolutionary need to eat animal proteins," another user tweeted.

Other users backed up claims that it's actually ok to feed a dog a vegan diet, advising people to "do their research" before "spreading misinformation."

"Please stop spreading [misinformation]," one fan wrote. "Dogs absolutely can thrive and vastly improve their health on plant based diets. I urge people not to read silly comments like this and please do actually research on the topic."

It's generally not advised to put a pet on a vegan diet unless they are in fact a herbivore— like a rabbit or a guinea pig.
