Only Down Under: Drivers gawk at a brave cat fighting a venomous brown snake on the side of the road - so how did the feline fare?

  • Cat was seen swiping at an eastern brown snake in a now viral TikTok video
  • The snake was seen striking at the cat who seemed unfazed by the deadly reptile
  • The woman who filmed the footage said she and her friends chased the cat away

A brave cat has been captured in terrifying footage taking on one of Australia's deadliest snakes.

The cat can be seen swiping at the eastern brown snake while on the side of a road in southern New South Wales this week.

Despite the highly venomous snake striking at the animal, the cat seemed unfazed and continued to jab the reptile with its paw.

The anxiety-inducing video was shared to TikTok with many desperate to know who won the battle.

'The cat never wins that one,' one person wrote.

'I've had two cats do that before and they came out second,' another said.

Other cat owners claimed their own pets had gone head-to-head with brown snakes before and miraculously survived.

The woman who filmed the video said while she had no intention of going anywhere near the deadly snake to protect the cat, she and her friends revved their car engine and chased the larger animal away.

Cats are twice as likely to survive from a brown snake bite than dogs are but many have still been killed after trying to take on the deadly reptiles.

Earlier this year on the Sunshine Coast a house cat named Arthur sadly lost his life after attacking a snake to protect two young children.

Arthur managed to kill the brown snake during the fight but suffered a bite which turned out to be fatal.

EASTERN BROWN SNAKES

Eastern brown snakes can grow up to 2.5 metres in length

They are found across all of eastern Australia from northern Queensland to southern Victoria

The snakes are one of the most dangerous in the world and can kill humans if bites are left untreated in just half an hour

They are responsible for killing the most people out of any other snake species.
